Orange Tree Furniture

Barnard Houtwerke, makers of the Orange Tree Furniture range, was established in 2005.

In the past, non productive citrus trees were uprooted and then burnt.  Mr Johan Barnard, a citrus farmer in the Letsitele area, recognized the quality of the citrus wood and began recovering the trunks.  He established Barnard Houtwerke, and with hard work, dedication, and in-house training, the company quickly grew into a top supplier of furniture.

This unique furniture is handmade from orange wood recovered from citrus orchards, on the banks of the Letaba River in Limpopo province. The furniture, branded under the name of Orange Tree Furniture, is created from redundant citrus trees that are cleared for the re-establishment of new orchards. The recycling of this beautiful wood makes the furniture a sustainable green product.

Citrus trees bear fruit for 30 to 50 years, and on reaching the end of their productive capacity, are replaced with young trees. It is these trunks that are recovered for use in the manufacture of furniture. The timber is treated and stack dried for 12 months before the manufacturing process starts. Each piece of furniture is handmade and uniquely identified by a crested serial number to reflect the quality, year of manufacture, and includes a product code. This serial number is recorded in a register, at the factory of origin, against which the buyers name is brought into record. Each item of furniture has the potential of becoming a collector’s piece. The designs remain timeless and finishes are natural or stained; a genuine South African product.

Citrus wood, in its natural form, is light yellow in colour, has a very fine grain and has exceptional qualities for carpentry. Joins in the wood are inevitable due to the short length of the planks, however, quality control ensures that joins are inconspicuous.

The most important characteristic of Orange Wood is that each tree trunk is unique, as depicted by its life cycle and environmental conditions. When the wood is stained, a blend of colour emerges that contributes to the exclusivity and distinctiveness of each piece of furniture. A universal colour cannot be guaranteed as these imperfections in the wood are characteristic of Orange Tree Furniture.

We believe that this is a world first and are not aware of any company manufacturing furniture from Citrus Wood.
